“Adire” is a traditional style of textile with a whole lot of history. It originated from the Yoruba tribe, in South-western Nigeria. The label Adire (meaning “tie and dye”) was first applied to indigo-dyed cloth decorated with resist patterns in the early twentieth century.
In Egba land (somewhere in Oyo State, Nigeria), the craft was formerly known to be a family business. Parents passed the techniques down to their female children and the wives of their sons. The production of Adire was something of a ritual, that only certain families could partake in.
